I am a huge fan of maxi dresses for the spring and summer! I love that they’re comfortable. I love that they can easily be dressed up or dressed down for any occasion. And I love that they are in every single store right now. So they are easy to find at any price point. As I pointed out in my beach vacation guide, they are great for summer vacay. So I thought I would elaborate.
I love the color and the pleating on this dress from JCPenney.
Gorgeous coral maxi.
This black and white reminds me of a charcoal drawing.
I adore this print.
Great example of a neutral plus sleeves!
Fabulous LBMD [little black maxi dress]. I love the sleeves and the deep V in front. Sexy.
I love the interesting detail at the neck.
I love the chevron stripe and the ruching at the waist. So flattering.
Another great LBMD.
Love the tie-dye.
A couple of things to remember about maxi dresses: Make sure they aren’t dragging on the ground. They should hit at either your ankle bone or at the top of your foot. Also, just like any dress, look for silhouettes that flatter your body type. I don’t wear the very flowy on the bottom style because they make me look 6 months pregnant. Deep v-necks are great for ladies with smaller chests, while a strap or halter style would be better for someone who is more blessed in that area.
I mentioned that maxis are incredibly easy to either dress up for a nice dinner out or dress down for a casual Saturday or even day at the beach. I’ve picked out a couple of my favorites and showed ways to dress them up and dress them down.
This maxi dress would be a great buy for any woman. The color is beautiful and perfect for spring and summer. I love the look of the buttons down the front and it even has a sexy slit where the buttons end. To dress down a maxi, pair it with flat sandals.
To dress it up, a pair of strappy sandals and a metallic bag are just the thing. The jewelry can be a bit fancier as well. To make it look dressy and chic, keep the accessories neutral since it’s already a pop of color.
To dress down a black maxi, make sure it is a stretchy, jersey material. Then pair it with wedges that are made of either cork or jute as those are the most casual materials for wedges [if the wedges are too dressy or not what you’re looking for on a casual look, just switch out some flat sandals]. Then add a denim jacket [or vest, if you dare!] and pair it with some colorful jewelry and accessories.
Now dressing up a jersey black maxi is a bit more challenging. A shiny belt and shoes can go a long way. I also kept the accessories all neutral and add a pop of animal print in the bag. Also appropriate would be a blazer.
I think this dress is inherently casual because of the fabric and the drawstring waist. So to go along with that vibe I paired it with flat sandals and kept the soft palette throughout. I love those sunglasses too.
Dressing it up was a bit harder. The patent strappy sandals definitely give it a more dressed up look. And I stuck with the soft palette again – using white jewelry.
Tomorrow – my attempt to make swimwear shopping much less painful!
