It’s hard to believe that the holidays are upon us! This is truly my favorite time of year – the Thanksgiving meal and family togetherness is the perfect kickoff. Followed by a month of gift shopping, baking, decorating the tree and house, wrapping and, of course, eating. Shopping for our family and friends can be quite tricky, though. Which is why I’ve put together this guide to help you pick the perfect gift for everyone on your list!
The first thing to do is really think about each person’s personality and interests. If they don’t give you any gift ideas, it’s really all you have to go on! My family and friends know that I am addicted to clothing, shoes and beauty products [and I make it pretty easy for them by doing this gift guide every year, no?!]. I know that my sister loves Lush products and that my dad loves gag gifts. So just take a few minutes to think about what your people really love. Because isn’t that the point of gift giving?
I’ve divided the guide by interests/hobbies. Fashion first, of course;)
If you’re buying for a fashionista, consider items that are on trend and those that are timeless and classic.
This jacket from Gap combines the moto trend with the plaid trend. Perfect!
Chambray is still hot, and this top by Current/Elliott is a great pick!
Stud earrings are everywhere, so get a little funky with these bar studs by Nadri.
These cashmere gloves are chic, tech friendly AND budget friendly. From Nordstrom.
If your giftee is into sparkle & shine, I love this Banana Republic skirt. It’s party ready!
It wouldn’t be my blog if I didn’t include lots of sparkle in my holiday gift guide 😉 Love this J.Crew sweater – and it’s 30% off right now!
These suede boots are classic! DV by Dolce Vita via Anthropologie
Love this tortoise ring – MICHAEL by Michael Kors.
Graphic tees are everywhere – whether it’s fun text or a cute picture of a puppy, pick a tee that suits the giftee’s personality! Love this Wildfox tee!
Comfy leggings also make great gifts – Madewell.
I could literally go on and on in the fashion category but must move onto beauty. I love receiving beauty products as gifts – I love to try new products and new brands! And then I love to give these gifts based on my own reviews! And that’s where Sephora comes in…
This my absolute favorite eye palette, hands down. It is universally flattering and the blending brush is like magic!
I am a huge fan of benefit cosmetics and this mascara.is.amazing. If you have a makeup lover on your list, get this gift set immediately!
Dior Addict lip gloss is legit and totally worth the $. It doesn’t get sticky [unless it gets in your hair on a windy day. ugh!] and there is a wide variety of shades!
Philosophy Amazing Grace is a great clean scent and this body creme makes skin soooo soft.
I love Bare Minerals eye brightener! Another miracle product!
I also loving giving fragrance as gifts, but it can be tough if you’re not sure what scent the recipient really likes. That’s why rollerballs are perfect so they can try out a scent to see if they like it! A few of my favorites –
Chloe – floral and fresh.
Viva la Juicy – fun and feminine.
Clinique Happy – an oldy but a goody. Tropical and citrusy.
Moving onto the entertainer. Someone who loves to have people over for the holidays, for celebrations or for no reason at all!
This platter is perfect because, though it is festive, it can really translate to entertaining all year round! Crate & Barrel
Ceramic cheese markers and…
Slate cheese board. So you can tell your guests which cheese they’re about to eat!
Really love these glasses from Anthropologie!
Salt & pepper shakers by Kate Spade. Clearly I’ve got a gold dot theme going here…
Absolutely love all of the little bowls you can find at West Elm. Perfect for entertaining!
Moving onto the person who always gets a lot of love from me – the chef/baker. So may cooks tools are out there, think about what this person doesn’t have and what their favorite dishes are to prepare!
My husband got me this Ninja blender several months ago and it is easily the most useful tool I have in the kitchen! Perfect for someone who loves to make sauces [hello pesto!] and smoothies! Easy to clean too, major bonus!
All bakers should have the Silpat baking mat. It makes cookies bake evenly and protects your cookie sheets! I love products that make cooking and baking easier and this tool is definitely one of those!
If I am baking, I always want cute little baking tools. These copper measuring cups from Anthropologie are lovely!
Another tool for the bakers on your list! Place your cookie sheets on the rack to cool!
If it’s in your budget, I highly recommend a Le Creuset french oven. Never would I have been able to make Julia Child’s beef bourguignon without mine!
If your giftee has a Kitchen Aid stand mixer, get him or her the pasta making attachment. It’s really fun to use!
Cake stands from Anthropologie!
Fun animal kitchen towels from West Elm!
For the movie & tv lover – boxed sets make great gifts!
This Harry Potter box set is only $40 for DVD and $54 for blu ray! Great gift if the person you are buying for is like me and likes to watch HP movies over and over…
How I Met Your Mother is one of the most hilarious shows and I am sad that it has ended. But you can now own the entire 9 season box set!
If your friend or family member doesn’t have Netflix, it makes a great gift! You can give them months of streaming or DVDs and they’ll love it [and you!] so much they’ll continue their subscription on their own!
For the active type. Good quality gym clothes make great holidays gifts! There are lots of cute jackets for the colder months that I love right now!
Lululemon. Sometimes wearing a cute jacket is the only way to get to the gym…amiright?
Nike via Nordstrom.
For the decorator. Decorative odds & ends make great gifts! Try to nail down their style and existing decor before you shop.
Mark & I were Christmas shopping yesterday and went into Pottery Barn. I explained to him that I always want to buy someone one of their faux fur throws but the only person who I think would like one is…me. So I guess I should buy myself one, eh?
I love these letter lights! Spell out a name or just a single letter to hang!
Jo Malone candles. Pricey but the smells are oh so amazing!
Love this funky vase from Modcloth.
Cute animal ring/jewelry dishes. Great idea for a newly engaged friend! 😉
Other great ideas:
1. Baked goods. I bake approximately 1 time per year – and that is right around the holidays. But I go way overboard with my baking. This year I capped the # of goods I am making to 7. Less than last year, I believe. I like to peruse Pinterest for cute packaging ideas that will distract people from the fact that I gave them sub-par baked goods 😉
2. Make a donation in someone’s honor. This is a really thoughtful gift for someone who really doesn’t want or need anything material. Choose a charity that the recipient is very passionate about and give. It’s a great feeling that you won’t get after leaving the mall. My favorite causes – Susan G. Komen [breast cancer]; Amfar [AIDs research]; St. Jude children’s Research Hospital [for the kiddos]; Local Humane Society.
3. Experiences. Again, gifts don’t have to be material! Book a vacation for your significant other [I like Southwest vacations for ease of booking!] Check out Groupon or Living Social for discounted local experiences, such as hot air balloon rides [aka my nightmare…but to each his own!], skydiving [see: nightmare], photography classes, cooking classes and much more!
Ahem, so I know that I included literally no gift ideas for men. Men need their own post, as they are so difficult to buy for. Stay tuned for a men’s gift guide and a budget gift guide. And then of course, my own personal wish list!
