Summer Wedding Wear

What do you like better: Chrismas or wedding season? The answer is…wedding season! (Yeah, I just made reference to Wedding Crashers. Sorry I’m not sorry.) I really do love weddings – The bridesmaid dresses, the bride’s dress, the music, the food, the CAKE, the love.

(BTW, I know I haven’t posted in awhile – quick update: Our house is still for sale. No other life updates to report on.)

Back to weddings. We get invited to all different types of weddings, so I’ve made a guide of my favorite dresses for each wedding style.

1. Beach wedding. I have a love/hate relationship with beach weddings. I love the beach and the casual feel of these weddings but the wind does ridiculous things to my hair and you will find sand EVERYWHERE. Nonetheless, I am not RSVPing ‘no’ to a beach wedding these days.

Casual dresses are great for the beach. Flowy fabrics in summery colors are perfect. Think jersey, chiffon and silk. And, if you must, maxi dresses work really well at beach weddings.

Madewell. You could definitely wear this with flat sandals.

Felicity & Coco via Nordstrom. This dress comes in a number of colors and the price is great!

Elizabeth and James via theoutnet. I really love this print!

2. Black tie. Let’s just go ahead and go to the other end of the spectrum. At a black tie wedding, men wear tuxes and you should wear something long. Look for something chic and classic. This is also a cool opportunity to take advantage of a ‘Rent the Runway’ dress – you can get a designer gown and wear it for 1 event for a much cheaper price tag than buying a new dress.

Badgley Mischka – $150 to rent, $600 to buy

Halston Heritage – $115 to rent, $700 to buy

3. Garden wedding. Think an outdoor location full of flowers and greenery. Why not just embrace the environment and wear a floral dress? If you’re not into patterns, look for a brightly colored dress at cocktail length or even tea length if it flatters your shape.

Yumi Kim via Revolve Clothing.

Cynthia Rowley via Bloomingdales. This dress is so classy and gorgeous.

4. The majority of the weddings we go to are somewhere in between the beachy casual wedding and black tie. They are typically in a nice hotel or cool venue. In my mind, these are the easiest to dress for because you can show up in almost any cocktail dress you already own and be dressed appropriately (unless it’s white…). If you’re like me, though, and want to buy a new dress, the below are my favorites that I’ve seen lately.

Milly via Nordstrom. I love the color of this dress – perfect for summer! And it’s on sale!

Joie via Gilt. Would also work well at a garden wedding.

Donna Morgan via Anthropologie. I love that it’s a classic black dress but has some texture.

Kate Spade. I had to include this dress because I recently purchased it for an amazing deal and you can pretty much wear this dress anywhere – work, on a date, to a wedding. It’s allllllll about the accessories. And it is so flattering. I was with a couple of girlfriends and we all 3 bought the dress and have very different figures. It’s like the sisterhood of the traveling sheath.

What’s really cool is when you are in a wedding and you don’t even have to pick your own dress 🙂
